The Ultimate Poster Size Guide: Dimensions, Uses & Printing Tips

When planning your next campaign or room decor project, understanding poster sizes and poster lengths is crucial. Whether you’re promoting an event, decorating a space, or looking to print poster artwork, choosing the right dimensions ensures clarity, impact, and professional results.

At GD Print, we’ve been helping customers get it right for over 40 years. With decades of experience in large-format printing, we know that getting the correct poster size is the first step to a successful print — whether it’s an A0 exhibition piece or a simple A3 poster for your shop window.

Standard Poster Dimensions (UK & International Sizes)

Paper is typically sized using the ISO 216 standard (A-series paper sizes), widely accepted in the UK and internationally. In rare situations you may encounter other paper sizes like the American Traditional format, but this is less common. Poster's however should always be in the ISO standard format for most consumer use. Here’s a breakdown of the most common poster sizes, their exact dimensions, and typical use cases:

If you want your posters to really impress, you might encounter the ISO 269 C sizes. These are commonly used for envelopes and other smaller print mediums such as brochures and booklets. However, if your poster is something special, you may want to include a large format envelope to both protect your print and add extra quality to the gift, this is where you will need the C paper sizes for posters. So what is the ISO & ISO standard?

The ISO is a company that, according to their website, organises the international standardisation of products, bringing together global experts to agree on the best way of doing things. [source] In other words (and relating to our industry) they decide the best sizes for paper based on a panel of industry leading experts.

The ISO standard 216 & 269 series for paper is what they have determined to be the best size for paper in conjunction with user use cases, machine trimming and overall comfort. ISO themselves define the reasoning for the paper standard as this:

"ISO 216:2007 specifies the trimmed sizes of writing paper and certain classes of printed matter.

It applies to trimmed sizes of paper for administrative, commercial and technical use, and also to certain classes of printed matter, such as forms, catalogues, etc.

It does not necessarily apply to newspapers, published books, posters or other special items which may be the subject of separate International Standards.

ISO 216:2007 also specifies the method for the indication of the machine direction for trimmed sheets."[source]

Now even though ISO mentions here that this standard dosen't necessarily apply to posters, most printers (including ourselves) still use this as our standard sizing options for poster printing (but custom sizing is available upon request here). This is mostly for ease of use as most customers understand the terms A4, A3, A2, ect.

Choosing the Right Poster Size

So then now that the common paper sizes have been outlined, what can you use each size for and what should printers expect when a customer requests an A0 poster for example? This is where GD Print and its 40+ years of printing experience can help. Here is a comprehensive list of each A series size and its most common uses.

A0 Poster Size — Maximum Impact

    •    Ideal for: Events, large-format outdoor campaigns, exhibitions

    •    Why choose it? A0 posters offer unmatched visibility and are perfect for high-traffic areas. With more space for design and messaging, they’re perfect for campaigns that need to stand out. A fantastic choice when you want to advertise a large event but don't require the size of a banner. View GD Print's A0 poster here.

A1 Poster Dimensions — Versatile and Striking

    •    Ideal for: Retail promotions, indoor displays, event signage, general advertising

    •    Why choose it? The A1 poster size balances size and practicality, making it our most popular format for posters in rooms, offices, and public spaces. Additionally, charities love this sizing to advertise small events at places like local churches. Visit our page here.

A2 Poster Size — Mid-Sized for Flexibility

    •    Ideal for: Small exhibitions, info posters, educational settings

    •    Why choose it? A2 is often used where detail is important but wall space is limited — making it perfect for tightly spaced venues or indoor walls. View our A2 posters here.

A3 Poster Size — Compact Yet Clear

    •    Ideal for: Community boards, notices, smaller promotions

    •    Why choose it? A3 posters are easy to produce and distribute, offering a great budget-friendly way to get your message seen without compromising quality. View our A3 poster here.

A4 Poster Size — Small but Effective

    •    Ideal for: Flyers, handouts, indoor notices, takeaway menus

    •    Why choose it?

A4 posters are perfect for close-up visibility in cafes, classrooms, and offices. They’re affordable, easy to print in bulk, and ideal for quick communication or promotional handouts. Restaurants and Cafes especially love our A4 posters, discover them here.

Posters for Room Décor, Schools, and Everyday Spaces

Whether you’re decorating a bedroom, outfitting a classroom, or adding visual flair to an office wall, posters remain a timeless way to express style, promote awareness, or set the mood. At GD Print, over our 40 years of business we print thousands of posters UK-wide each year—from minimalist art prints to bold promotional displays—and we know how important both poster size and poster length are in getting the right visual impact.

- Please Note: GD Print is a printers, we cannot supply artwork (unless you pay for designers), but we will print your artwork!

Popular poster themes we regularly print include:

    •    Music Posters – From vintage band artwork to modern gig flyers, A2 and A1 are ideal poster sizes for framing and home display. Great for collectors or music venues.

    •    Horror Movie Posters – Perfect for fans of cult classics or contemporary chillers. A1 and B2 work beautifully for dramatic, cinematic artwork.

    •    Football Posters – Whether it’s your favourite Premier League player, club logo, or a commemorative match poster, sports-themed prints are popular for bedrooms, gyms and man caves.

    •    Posters of Cars – High-quality, large-format car posters are popular with collectors and automotive fans. Ideal in A2 or A1 size depending on wall space and detail.

    •    Christmas Posters – A seasonal favourite for shop windows, schools, and community centres. A3 or A2 sizes work well for indoor festive displays.

    •    Filmmaker Posters – Independent creators often print short film promotional posters to display at festivals or events. A3 and A2 are common, while A0 is used for red carpet backdrops or exhibitions.

Educational & Public Awareness Posters:

    •    Online Safety Posters – Help educate students or office teams with clearly designed, attention-grabbing posters. A3 or A2 is ideal for classroom or IT suite walls.

    •    Anti-Bullying Posters – Promote inclusivity and respect in schools or workplaces. Bright, impactful A3 posters are a popular choice.

    •    Health and Safety Posters – Whether it’s hygiene advice or workplace safety procedures, clear, well-sized posters (typically A2 or A1) help meet regulations and keep teams informed.

Tip: For gallery walls or themed collections (e.g., a series of football posters or horror movie posters), we recommend consistent sizing such as A3 or B3. This keeps layouts clean and visually balanced.

Looking to protect your artwork? For posters that will be gifted, sold, or displayed professionally, consider pairing them with C-series envelopes to protect the paper from creasing or wear. This is especially helpful if you’re shipping or storing music posters or filmmaker posters.

What GD Print Recommends

With 40+ years in the print industry and thousands of posters produced, we always recommend silk paper posters for everyday use. Silk paper offers an elegant, smooth finish, excellent print clarity, and built-in UV resistance — perfect for both indoor and semi-outdoor poster displays. For additional waterproofing and UV damage prevention, consider a matt lamination and plastic paper as this will provide optimal protection from the sun and other weather conditions.
