01 · EVERYDAY PAPER SIZES

A-series paper size chart

A4 is a useful reference point: A3 has twice its area, while A5 has half its area. Each step down the series halves the area of the preceding sheet, with dimensions rounded to whole millimetres.

A4210 × 297mm
A5148 × 210mm
A6105 × 148mm
A3, A4, A5 and A6 shown at the same reduced scale for comparison. These are not life-size sheets. Swipe sideways on a small screen to see the full diagram.

Which size should I choose? A4 suits many documents and brochures; A5 is a compact booklet or leaflet format; A6 is useful for postcard-sized print. A3 and larger sizes are often used for posters. Check the formats offered by the product you are ordering.
02 · LARGER ALTERNATIVE FORMATS

B-series paper sizes

B-series sheets have the same general proportions as A-series sheets, but sit between their equivalent A sizes and the next larger A size. For example, B2 is 500 × 707mm, compared with A2 at 420 × 594mm.

These are standard reference dimensions, not a promise that every size is offered for every GD Print product. Always match the product’s stated size and template.

03 · MORE THAN A-SERIES PAPER

DL, business cards and square formats

DL leaflet: 99 × 210mm

A slim format often used for leaflets, menus and inserts. It is approximately one third of an A4 sheet.

Check the exact product dimensions: some slim formats are specified as 100 × 210mm rather than 99 × 210mm.

Typical UK business card: 85 × 55mm

A common finished business-card size. Square, folded and other card formats have different dimensions.

Use the template for your chosen card; the size here is a reference example.

Square sizes

A square document has equal width and height, for example 148 × 148mm or 210 × 210mm. These are examples of a shape and size, rather than A-series names. Check the available size on the actual product page.

“Strip” is not one universal size. If a brief says “A4 strip”, “one-third A4” or “DL”, confirm the exact width and height before designing. A flat sheet, folded leaflet and envelope can use similar names but have different measurements.
04 · MATCH THE ENVELOPE TO THE INSERT

Common envelope sizes

EnvelopeSize in mmTypical insert
C4229 × 324A4 sheet, unfolded
C5162 × 229A5 sheet, or A4 folded in half
C6114 × 162A6 sheet, or A4 folded into quarters
DL envelope110 × 220A4 sheet folded into thirds

An envelope is larger than the paper it holds. A DL envelope at 110 × 220mm is different from a DL leaflet at 99 × 210mm. Thick booklets, multiple inserts and unusual folds may need extra space; check fit before ordering.

05 · WIDTH, HEIGHT AND FOLDING

Portrait, landscape and folded size

The same paper size in two orientations, shown at a reduced scale. Width is listed first, followed by height.

Flat size

The complete sheet before folding. An A4 sheet measures 210 × 297mm, or 297 × 210mm in landscape orientation.

Finished folded size

The size once folded. An A4 sheet folded in half creates an A5 format, approximately 148 × 210mm. For a booklet, the stated size usually describes one finished page.

Illustrative three-panel layout. Dashed pink lines show fold positions. Roll folds can need unequal panel widths, so use the correct template rather than dividing every sheet into equal thirds.
06 · READY TO DESIGN?

Finished size is not the same as artwork size.

Bleed extends the background beyond the finished edge so it can be trimmed cleanly. GD Print’s general paper-print guidance is 3mm bleed on every edge, with important text and logos at least 5mm inside the trim. Specialist products and finishing can require different allowances; your exact product template takes priority.

Image resolution at final size

For photographs in close-viewed paper print, aim for 300 pixels per inch at the finished printed size. Enlarging a small image does not create original detail. Vector logos stay sharp when resized; large-format artwork needs job-specific checks.

Millimetres to pixels: mm ÷ 25.4 × ppi. As an example, A4 at 300 ppi is approximately 2480 × 3508 pixels before bleed. Supply a correctly sized print PDF rather than relying on pixel dimensions alone.

See our illustrated bleed guide, image quality advice and PDF export help.
