Top Tips for Designing Business Cards

A Practical Guide to Layouts, Bleed Areas & Designs by Business Type

Designing a business card might seem straightforward, but getting it right involves more than just dropping your logo and contact details into a box. A well-designed business card reflects your brand, communicates value, and can even drive new business. In fact, studies have proven people are 10 times more likely to keep business cards in colour than white ones, which just goes to show how much of an impact design has for not just aesthetics, but business. At GD Print, we’ve helped thousands of clients over our 40+ years of business, craft cards that truly stand out—here are our top tips to help you do the same.

1. Understand Bleed Areas and Safe Zones

Before you dive into design, you need to know how business card layouts work. Here is a quick synopsis, but if you want a more in-depth look on the topic, discover our article here.

Bleed Area

This is the area that extends beyond the final cut size. Any background colours or images should go all the way to the edge of this to avoid white lines when trimmed. For business cards, we recommend a 3mm bleed on all sides.

Trim Line

This is where the card will be cut. For a standard UK card, that’s 85mm x 55mm.

Safe Zone

Keep text and important content at least 3-5mm inside the trim line to prevent accidental cutting.

2. General Design Tips for Business Cards

Designing business cards can be a hard and daunting topic, being creative and unique is tough in the current business world. According to market research your business card holds the attention of its recipient for only 10 seconds, so it is vital to make sure your design is perfect and easy to follow. [source

However, GD Print is here to help. Based on our 40+ years of business, we have noticed some of the common pitfalls businesses fall into when designing business cards. We have compiled some of the most crucial steps for designing a successful business card, what you should avoid and what you should be implementing.

Less is more

Don’t overload your card with information. Stick to your name, job title, phone, email, and website/social links. People should be able to digest all the information in 10 seconds or less.

Coloured backgrounds for consistent engagement

Statistic's state that people are 10 times more likely to keep business cards in colour than white ones [source], so add some flare to your design!

Use readable fonts

Choose clear fonts at a size of at least 7pt. If you want to go classic, choose popular fonts like Helvetica, Arial or Baskerville. [source]

Contrast is key

Light text on dark backgrounds or vice versa ensures legibility.

Use your brand colours

Reinforce brand recognition and trust. Associate your colours with your brand identity.

High-resolution graphics

Use 300dpi CMYK images to avoid pixelation in print.

3. Designing for Your Industry

    •    Creative Industries (Artists, Designers, Photographers)

Use square or mini cards for a modern, visual edge. Include minimal text—social handles or a QR code to your portfolio work great. Don’t be afraid to add bold colours or artistic textures.

    •    Retail & Boutique Brands

Consider folded business cards to tell a brand story or include discount codes, price lists, or a short brand message. Product photos or illustrations are great visual cues here.

    •    Professional Services (Lawyers, Accountants, Consultants)

Stick with the standard 85mm x 55mm layout. Opt for a clean, classic design with high contrast and strong typography. Matt lamination adds a smooth, serious finish.

    •    Hospitality & Beauty (Salons, Restaurants, Therapists)

Folded cards are ideal for appointment slots, loyalty stamps, or treatment menus. Use pastel colours and imagery to create a calm, inviting feel.

    •    Tech & Startups

Incorporate QR codes or NFC tags. Try modern designs with minimal text, sharp edges, and gloss lamination to evoke innovation.

4. Match Your Design to Your Business Card Type

Each card format offers unique design opportunities and ways to portray information, as covered in the previous section, depending on your business needs, your card type will change. Here GD Print will break down what you can expect from each business card type and how it may be useful to you and your business needs.

    •    Standard Cards (85mm x 55mm)

The most standard business card type, useful for all industries and all occasions. Less functionality and unique qualities compared to other business card types, but always reliable in what you need it to achieve.

Stick to a horizontal layout. Use one side for contact details and the other for logo/tagline or a call-to-action. Ideal for dual-language content or social links.

    •    Square Cards (55mm x 55mm)

A business card type that is rising in popularity, perfect for creative individuals who only need to display limited and essential information, but still create memories. The square shape of the card supports artwork nicely but provides less space for information, so it's not ideal for professional and formal environments.

You might only need a logo, art piece or QR code on the front, with contact info on the back. Keep it punchy.

    •    Mini Cards (85mm x 25mm)

A unique and uncommon design that is popular in both the tech and art industry, ideal for handing out and usually quite disposable.

Best for minimalist designs. Don’t cram text—use these for name, logo, and website/social only. Think of them as sleek brand reminders. Additionally, because of its unique shape, they can be useful in the perfume industry as a perfume blotter!

    •    Folded Cards (170mm x 55mm folded to 85mm x 55mm)

The most flexible business card design that can be used for a wide variety of uses, the most kept business card type.

Fantastic to store a large amount of information without the business card looking cluttered, where you can truly flex your creative design skills. Popular for stores wanting something truly premium or for alternative uses such as stamped loyalty schemes.
