What is Embossing? A Comprehensive Guide
What is Embossing? A Comprehensive Guide
Embossing is a finishing option used in printing to get a raised or lowered appearance, typically used on business cards in print, it adds three dimensionality and a premium feel to your print by emphasising crucial details such as a logo, name, or section of an image; the choice is yours with embossing. Within this article, GD Print and our 40+ years of printing experience will break down the different types of embossing, how they are made and which is ideal for your project.
Embossing, Debossing & Digital Ink, What's The Difference?
Embossing
Embossing, is the raising of certain parts of a design to give a 3 dimensional feel. Not just used in the printing industry, it defines the process of a raised surface in an otherwise flat design. The process involves creating a die based on a supplied design that presses into a flat counterforce, providing a permanently raised surface. The die provides the raising, the counterforce distributes the weight evenly across the surface, providing consistency and a balanced and precise raising. [Xometry, Dean McClements, 2024]
Debossing
Debossing is the opposite of this, lowering a section of a design for the same effect. This is not limited to the print industry and is typically used on thicker materials such as leather or thick card or metal. The process for debossing is identical except with a different design provided. For example, a business card will be placed design first into the die on the embossing press, rather than the design facing the counterforce when embossing, lowering rather than raising that section of the design.
Digital Ink Embossing
Used exclusively in the print industry, Digital Ink Embossing is a post-print process comparable to Spot UV that provides a raised varnished surface without the need for an embossing machine or die. The Digital Ink Embossing process uses a flash-cured varnish applied over selected areas of your print to create a raised surface, eliminating the risk of potentially damaging the material through indentation. The raised surface is also malleable, allowing more complex areas to be raised to any desired micron height without the need to recreate dies or be limited by the minimum level of indentation that traditional embossing typically provides. [Scodix, 2010]
Benefits Of Each Embossing Type
Here is a comparative table of what each type of embossing provides.

Best Applications For Each Method
Embossing
Embossing is usually reserved for premium printing. Due to its high setup cost and limitations when proofing and testing, embossing can be an expensive and error prone medium. When traditionally embossing, you usually know what you are looking for and are a repeat customer as the die has been made, and further additional printing is reduced in price because of this. Stock wise embossing can be applied on most high gsm and micron paper, business cards of large volumes is the prominent embossed print medium. Merchandise is popular as well, thick book covers, packaging and presentation folders are all common items to use embossing on.
Debossing
Debossing has the same limitations as embossing but with further impediments. Higher grammage or micron material is mandatory to feel the effect of the embossing and not damage the material, fine details can be lost in the debossing and alignments can be tricky to set up, potentially creating a lot of wastage. Due to this, debossing is less popular than embossing or digital ink in print and more relevant in other mediums such as leather works; when it is used in print it is often for merchandising such as books or packaging.
Digital Ink
Digital is a more cost effective form of embossing with no heavy setup costs, adequate room for testing, low quantities, and designs that can have precise details embossed, with varying options in the malleability of embossing. The limitations of digital ink are the range of items that can be embossed and the number of companies that have implemented digital ink printers within their print pipeline. Digital Ink can only be used by printers that have the technology implemented and only on flat surfaces like business cards, flat pack packaging or other similar merchandise.
