With our vast experience working with various paper types and print finishes, we ensure that every print job not only meets but exceeds expectations.

What Is GSM in Paper and Why Does it Matter?

GSM (grams per square metre) measures the weight and thickness of paper, it can also be known as the Grammage of the paper. Different gsm's are used for a variety of reasons such as effect, cost and quality in some instances.  Whilst a higher gsm dosen't necessarily affect quality when it comes to printing, it can help. Newspapers are always a low gsm to prioritise cost margins and disposability and are generally considered low quality. Whereas booklet's are printed with a higher gsm cover and lower gsm inner pages, the varying gsm's providing a higher quality feel to the product.

But whilst GSM can be an indicator of quality, it is not always reflective of it, users require different features and gsm's out of paper for different purposes. Fountain pens paper is the perfect example of this as often times a higher gsm is not ideal. This is because, according to Jetpens:

"A higher paper weight doesn’t necessarily mean that the paper is better or less likely to exhibit feathering or bleedthrough. Paper weight matters most when it comes to combining sheets into a notebook or notepad. Thinner paper allows for notebooks to have more pages, though it also generally increases the likelihood of showthrough." [JetPens].

Lower gsm's are often the standard here and the quality of the paper is prioritised over the thickness, but even then, some writers may prefer a slightly thicker paper, on top of quality, to reduce show through and for the general feel of writing; emphasising how gsm is preference and not linked to quality.

Examples of different GSM's for Printing
Here are some examples of use cases for different paper gsm's:

•    Lower GSM papers (70-100 GSM) are thin, lightweight, and ideal for high-volume printing (e.g., newspapers, office paper, hand outs). They emphases disposability and cost margins, so they are as thin as they can functionally be without affecting legibility.

•    Mid-range GSM papers (120-170 GSM) are great for flyers, posters, and brochures, offering a balance of flexibility and quality. Designed to be read through or kept around for future reference, they need the added durability that a higher gsm provides, whilst still being foldable and malleable enough to fit inside a pocket or bag.

•    High GSM papers (200-400 GSM) provide sturdiness and a premium feel, making them ideal for business cards, wedding invitations, and luxury print products. Designed to be kept and often complimented by foiling and other premium printing features.

•    Very High GSM duplex papers (400+ GSM) maximum sturdiness and very unique and premium feel, ideal for bespoke printing options. Very niche case printing for specific needs and requirements.

A Breakdown of Common GSM Ranges and Their Best Uses

At GD Print, we’ve handled thousands of print projects across a range of paper weights. Below is our expert breakdown of the most common GSM categories and how they’re used in professional printing:

1. Lightweight Papers (70–100 GSM)

Thin and flexible, lightweight papers are cost-effective for high-volume printing.

    •    Common Uses: Newspapers, office documents, letterheads, large-volume flyers.

    •    Example: Standard printer paper (80 GSM).

2. Medium-Weight Papers (120–170 GSM)

This range offers a strong balance between affordability and professional appearance, making it a go-to choice for marketing collateral.

    •    Common Uses: Promotional flyers, folded leaflets, posters, catalogue pages.

    •    Industry Insight: The majority of our printed flyers and folded brochures are produced using 170 GSM silk stock—offering great colour vibrancy and a substantial feel without excessive thickness.

3. Heavyweight Papers (200–300 GSM)

More rigid and durable, this category suits materials that need to withstand frequent handling or deliver a more premium feel.

    •    Common Uses: Postcards, business cards, luxury brochures, product packaging.

    •    Example from Practice: 250 GSM silk or uncoated stock is our most requested weight for promotional postcards and event handouts—offering the perfect blend of quality and durability.

4. Extra-Heavyweight Papers (300–400 GSM)

Thick, rigid, and luxurious—these papers are ideal for prestige print products where first impressions truly matter.

    •    Common Uses: Wedding invitations, high-end business cards, signage and display boards.

    •    Expert Tip: For our wedding clients and luxury brand materials, we often recommend 350–400 GSM uncoated or recycled cardstock to deliver a memorable tactile experience.

Our most popular

With over 40 years of experience, GD Print has worked with a wide variety of clients, from small businesses to luxury brands, to create high-quality print products. We’ve found that 170 GSM and 300 GSM are among the most commonly used weights for a range of materials. 170 GSM offers that premium yet disposable feel, while 300 GSM provides the perfect thickness for premium products that leave a lasting impression without compromising usability.

How to Choose the Right GSM for Your Print Project

1. Durability and Handling

    •    Frequent handling? Choose 200+ GSM for longevity.

    •    Disposable materials? 100-170 GSM works well for marketing flyers.

2. Brand Perception

    •    Premium brands should opt for thicker paper (300+ GSM) for a luxury feel.

    •    Corporate documents can use 120-150 GSM for a professional but cost-effective solution.

3. Print Costs vs. Quality

    •    Higher GSM paper costs more, but provides a better impression.

    •    Low-cost bulk printing? Stick to 100-150 GSM for a balance of price and quality.

4. Printing Considerations

    •    Digital printing works best with 100-250 GSM.

    •    Offset printing is better suited for high-GSM papers (200+ GSM).

Expert Tip: Avoid low-GSM papers for designs with heavy ink coverage, as they can bleed or wrinkle easily.
